Epona
A locally oriented ‘walk to’ natural burial ground
For residents of Chagford parish by virtue of birth, residence or occupation and adjoining parishes (at least until they have their own natural burial ground). Beyond this only by reason of undertaking regular volunteer work for Epona or Regenco.
Epona Natural Burial Ground is located on a beautiful piece of land just twenty minutes’ walk from central Chagford. It comprises a dynamic mosaic of natural regeneration, meadow and wood pasture with far reaching views.
Churchyards are filling up
The churchyard at Chagford’s St Michael’s church is close to full capacity
Over 70% of people are now cremated
Traditional cremation in the UK has been shown to be detrimental to the environment due to pollution and the use of fossil fuels
Epona will be able to provide an alternative
Natural burial avoids the use of ecologically destructive processes and also is able to feed the land
UPDATE: We have been granted planning permission for Epona Natural Burial site. Happy to report that we received full support from all those who expressed an opinion. There were no objections.
The official opening of Epona Natural Burial Ground will be midday on Sunday 5th July
Epona is primarily a walk to site and is a steep climb, we are hiring a minibus on the day for those who would prefer not to walk. It will leave Chagford main car park at 11.40am.
Please contact Jeremy on 07717 853967 if you would like a place on the bus so we have an idea of numbers.
The opening ceremony will include a short story, a snack or two and a bit of tipple. Afterwards you are welcome to wander round the burial ground so appropriate footwear is recommended. There will be some shelter and places to sit if rain happens.
Please consider becoming a Founding Friend to help us cover the considerable establishment costs for the site.
